CMAM and IYCF Nutrition Programme — Damboa and Geidam

Focus

Addressing malnutrition among pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and children under two years old through Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) programs.

Nutrition interventions, including therapeutic feeding, counseling on appropriate infant and young child feeding practices, and malnutrition screening.

• Malnutrition screening of children under two years old at community level.

Results

• 500 pregnant and lactating women received nutrition support and IYCF counselling.
• 1,000 children under two years old screened and supported through the CMAM pathway.
• Programme delivered across two states — Damboa in Borno and Geidam in Yobe — both in the conflict-affected North East.

What we learned

• Delivering CMAM and IYCF as a single package, rather than sequentially, keeps mothers engaged through both the treatment and the prevention components.
• Community-based screening reaches children who would never present at a facility, which is decisive in areas with restricted movement.
